Pregnancy is one of the most important phases in one’s life.

People especially the “Mom to be” are extra cautious these days in all the activities during that time and naturally they are anxious regarding dental treatment of any to be done and the safety of their child.

What type of dental work is safe during pregnancy?

So you can have your as usual checkups and even teeth cleaning as long as you are not anxious about these procedures.

Teeth cleaning or scaling is especially important as pregnancy increases the risk of gum diseases.

Emergency dental treatment should be performed as it can increase risk of infection to your child and also may sometimes lead to severe pain just before the delivery due date during which time, it is difficult for the patients to lie down on the dental chair

Small cavity fillings and some other elective dental procedures can be done during the second trimester (3-6 months)

Unnecessary cosmetic procedures like bleaching can be postponed to after birth of the baby.

Are X-rays safe?

X-rays if needed for emergency procedures have to be taken and a digital RVG X-ray causes very less radiation comparable to your normal environmental radiation.

These Xrays have to be taken under the protection of lead apron as shown in the picture.

Is the dental anesthesia safe?

Lignocaine which is the most commonly used is safe during pregnancy and minimal amount should be used to obtain anesthesia.

Drugs during pregnancy:

Drugs should be avoided as much as possible but in unavoidable circumstances it is better to always get the gynecologists opinion before prescribing and taking drugs like antibiotics.
